Common Myths and Misconceptions
- “Eating breakfast makes me hungrier”. Eating breakfast has the effect of boosting your metabolism first thing in the morning and allowing the body to burn energy more efficiently. Some people find that as a result of their increased metabolism they may feel hungrier on occasions. If this happens simply plan for a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit or low calorie cereal bar.
- “I don’t need breakfast”. We all have the same basic physiological need to provide the body with fuel and nutrition – although you may be used to not having breakfast this does not mean that your body does not need breakfast.
Tips and Tricks
- To start with focus on eating some kind of breakfast and after a few times, work on the quality of your breakfast.
- Start small – small changes produce big results and you are more likely to succeed and continue with your new healthy habit.
- Try planning on having 3 different breakfasts e.g. a breakfast cereal one morning; toast another morning and a fruit smoothie or low fat yoghurt on the third.
- Cereal companies are pushing hard for you to choose their brand – many cereals are now made with whole grain which is better for you.
- If you manage nothing else, at least have a glass of juice or fruit smoothie as a nutritious liquid start to the day.
- Choosing a high fibre breakfast cereal to boost fibre intake will keep you feeling fuller for longer e.g. a wholegrain or bran based variety.
- It may sound obvious – but buy things you like. There are many ‘gurus’ who are pushing weird and strange concoctions to have for breakfast – the general rule is to stick to what you know to begin with.
- Keep a ready sliced loaf of bread in the freezer so you can cook toast from frozen – perfect for those mornings when you have run out of your other breakfast choices.
