Taking breakfast with you on days when you don’t have time at home

The Basics

“Starting the day stressed and without breakfast is likely to affect the whole of your day. Breakfast eaters are calmer and have a better mood than those who have skipped breakfast”, Todd Donnelly, nutritionist, says.

He adds, “Nutrients missed at breakfast are not made up later in the day. In order to achieve the best nutrition everyday have something to eat early in the day – even if it’s on the run”.

Common Myths and Misconceptions

  • “Skipping breakfast does not matter – I can make up the missed nutrients later”.  Not true. The nutrients, vitamins and minerals missed at breakfast are not made up later in the day – people who skip breakfast have a less nutritious diet.

  • “I don’t need breakfast”. Not true – we do not expect a car to run without petrol and equally we cannot expect the body to run without fuel. During the morning the body and mind both work better after breakfast is consumed.

  • “I can grab something on the way”.  You can grab something on the way – yes – but often the best choices are limited and it’s all too easy to end up with something that is high in energy, fat and sugars. It is far better nutritionally (and can be much cheaper) to plan ahead and stock the cupboard with portable breakfast foods e.g. bananas, healthy option cereal bars, cans of fruit in juice etc.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you know you are going to be rushed the following morning make a breakfast sandwich the night before. Keep it in the fridge overnight and grab it in the morning to eat at your work desk, or in the 5 minutes after the kids have left for school before you start your day. (This only works if you remember, so stick a post-it or leave a note with your keys).

  • Keep a box of breakfast cereal or low calorie cereal bars in your desk drawer at work so that you have something to eat on days when you are too late to have breakfast at home.

Buy small bottles of fruit juice or smoothies to grab and run first thing in the morning. This and a cereal bar make a good start to the day.
