Healthy Eating Tips for Eating Out - Eating slowly and savouring every mouthful
Eating slowly will make a meal last longer. It takes about 20 – 30 minutes for your body to register that you’ve eaten enough – that’s why you can eat yourself silly for 20 odd minutes and then feel totally stuffed.
Chewing is the fist stage in the digestion of your food; it also moves the food over your taste buds giving you the full experience of tastes and textures - don’t short change your taste buds, give your food a good chewing!
Common Myths and Misconceptions
- “My food will get cold” – If your dinner is served at a decent temperature to begin with this shouldn't be a problem. If your food is too cool when it arrives, ask for it to be reheated.
- “I’m in a rush or the restaurant wants the table back” – If this is the case order a one course meal as soon as you sit down – this will save some time.
Tips and Tricks
- If you’re pressed for time, ask the waiter to wait at the table when you are seated and order straight away. Ordering starters, or side orders, instead of main courses can save time (and calories) too.
- In a hurry? Ask for the bill to be presented with your main course – so if you choose to, you can pay and leave. They can always add an extra order on to your bill if needed.
- By eating slowly, your body will register that you’re full before you have finished your meal – this may help in skipping the dessert!
- Aim to be the last person to finish your meal – by the way, this is the polite thing to do if you’re the host.
