Healthy Eating Tips for Eating Out - Having a hot drink instead of dessert

Having a hot drink, like a herbal tea, coffee or a hot chocolate will finish off a meal out without having to use up a week’s worth of Nutrition Card® Treats. Milky coffees, such as Lattes and Cappuccinos can contain sufficient milk to count as 1 Dairy portion on your Nutrition Card® - helping optimise your calcium intake for bone strength.

 

Common Myths and Misconceptions

  • “Having a hot drink at night may keep me up” - If your drink contains caffeine this may be the case. If caffeine affects you in this way, try a caffeine-free herbal tea or decaffeinated coffee. A high fat dessert, which causes indigestion, could also make it difficult for you to sleep!
  • “A liquor coffee night cap will help me sleep” Both caffeine and alcohol can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep, so choose such a night cap with caution.

 

Tips and Tricks

  • Skimmed / semi skimmed milk rather than full fat milk in your milky coffee e.g. will help reduce the calorie content of lattes, etc
  • If having hot chocolate drink, ask for skimmed milk - if you want cream, ask for just a little on top
  • The biscuit served with your coffee may be ½-1 portion from the Treats section on your Nutrition Card® - so don't forget to count it!
  • Are the mints served with your coffee individually wrapped? If not, play this guessing game: how many unwashed hands have been in the mint jar? Stick with your own sugar-free gum or mints.
