Healthy Eating Tips for Eating Out - Placing you table napkin over you food once you are finished

Placing your table napkin over any unwanted food on your plate will help stop you ‘picking’ at the leftovers, and perhaps help banish the "clear your plate" conditioning instilled in most of us during childhood - the waiter won’t tell you to stay at the table until you’ve eaten it all up! It will also indicate to the waiter that you have finished, allowing them to clear away your plate. 

 

Common Myths and Misconceptions

  • “It’s rude to place your napkin on your plate” It is a good way of showing those around you that you have definitely finished. Sometimes just putting your knife and fork together is not enough to signal to the waiter that you are finished and wish to have your plate removed.
  • “I need to keep my napkin” Ask the waiter to bring you another one.

 

Tips and Tricks

  • 'Listen' to your body for the signals that you're getting close to having eaten enough - don't be afraid to leave food on the plate when you're satiated - make a small donation to charity if you're concerned about "that waste could have fed a hungry mouth"!
  • Mentally asking yourself the question "...am I still hungry?" half way through the main course may help you to anticipate the point at which you will have eaten enough - visualising how much food you intend to leave on the plate will help prepare you for placing that napkin over the leftovers when the time comes
  • Ask the waiter to remove your plate as soon as possible after you've finished eating.
  • Don't be concerned about soiling a lovely linen napkin, because it will be washed either way (we hope!)
