Healthy Eating Tip for Eating Out - Adding sparkling water to white wine
If you drink white wine regularly, try adding soda to it to make a white wine spritzer, or top it up with sparkling water. Not only will this help limit the amount of alcohol you drink, but the soda water counts towards your 2 litres a day liquid target
Common Myths and Misconceptions
- “Is it soda, tonic or lemonade you add to a spritzer?” - There can be some confusion over what to add to the wine – some bars add tonic water, some soda and others lemonade. The best mixer to add is soda water with a twist of lemon rind. Avoid lemonade – it tastes too sweet and contains unnecessary calories.
- “It will ruin my wine” - Spritzers are usually made with the house wine (sometimes it’s the only way to drink them) – but you can make a spritzer with low or a mid-range priced wine. However, if someone at the table orders a bottle of Montrachet 1978 from Domaine de la Romane-Conti (one of the most expensive bottles of white wine ever sold) – it may be a tad rude to ask for a glass of it to be made into a spritzer.
Tips and Tricks
- Check with the waiter/bar person how they make spritzers before ordering – if they use lemonade ask for soda water – all bars/restaurants will have soda water.
- Make your own at the table by ordering a bottle of sparkling water, or a glass of soda, water and adding wine to it - a glass of soda water should be served free.
