Standing instead of sitting on public transport
The Basics
You use up more energy standing up than you do sitting down - many people spend most of their working day sitting down and so it can become habit to sit the moment you see a free seat.
Common Myths, misconceptions and excuses
- “I have had a hard day’s work and I am tired” – most people will be tired at the end of the day – possibly through lack of activity. The fitter you are, the more energy you’ll have.
Tips & tricks
- This is a great way to make someone’s day – if you are sitting down on a bus or train and there are no more seats – offer yours to the next person who you feel needs to sit down more than you do.
- Wear trainers to and from work (black one are less noticeable and don’t show the dirt) – these will be more comfortable to walk and stand in.
- By standing in the aisle, you can avoid the crush of having to push past all those standing near the doors.
- Giving up your seat to someone is a good thing to do. It makes them feel good, you feel good about yourself and you may well be setting a good example to those around you.
