Spot a Fad Diet
So how do you spot a fad diet? If one or more of the following points feature, it’s a fad diet…
- Guarantees weight loss of more than 2 pounds a week
- Claims to cure conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and food allergies and intolerances
- Encourages you to buy products such as shakes, supplements or meal replacements
- Encourages you to (more likely demands you to!) cut out certain foods or food groups
Healthy, sensible weight loss occurs at the rate of 1–2 pounds a week. Any more than that and you could just be losing water and also muscle, not fat. Slowly but surely, that’s the motto here.
But you may feel that you want faster results, as promised by so many diet books and online services. No matter how attractive the latest diet might seem, whatever you do, stay away from fads. There is no quick fix…
Fad diets are not balanced diets
Remember that there are no good or bad foods, it’s the overall balance of what you eat that is important. And a balance of the different nutrients provided by the different food groups is essential for optimum health and mental performance.
Research shows that weight control efforts are most successful if a flexible approach is taken and no foods or drinks are ’forbidden‘. After all, there’s more to life than following what someone else thinks you must and mustn’t eat – so why do it?
