Walking on the escalators – not standing on them
The Basics
So many people say they never have enough time in the day - then stand on the escalator! It’s easier to walk up an escalator than walk up normal stairs.
Before escalators, people walked up and down stairs. It’s true, we have researched this. And what do you do when one is out of action – stand around until it’s repaired?
Myths, misconceptions and excuses
- “It feels odd walking on an escalator that has stopped." Using escalators that have stopped can make you feel a little odd when you walk on them – it has been suggested that this is because we are so used to them moving our brain is ‘tricked’ - It has many more memories of escalators moving so it automatically compensates for this movement and so you feel odd (a bit like wearing roller-skates for awhile and then taking them off and for a short period you still feel like you’re wearing them – funny lot aren’t we?!).
Tips & tricks
- Walking up and down stairs will build up endurance in your bottom, thighs and calves. It’s the best way to challenge your legs and you get where you’re going quicker!
- Begin by walking up or down one set of escalators each day (either on your journey or at work). Progress to never standing on them again – the fitter you become the easier it gets.
- Wear a pair of trainers to and from work and change into your shoes when you get to work – so much more comfortable. If it matters what they look like buy black trainers, they will be less conspicuous than white trainers (and won’t show the dirt) – at the end of the day your feet won’t be so tired and this will make reaching your weight, wellness and health goals through activity more enjoyable.
- When you’re out and about – especially in shopping centres – look for the stairs or walk on the escalators – feel smug in thinking that you’re going to reach your waist /dress size goal quicker than those using the lift or standing on the escalators.
Why wait with everyone to queue up to get on an escalator just to stand on it – often the escalators are not long and you could be up and out before the crowds by walking up them.
