Healthy Eating Tips for Shopping

Healthy eating starts with healthy shopping!  Ensuring you have healthy options to hand in the kitchen, at the office, or on the go, will make it much easier to stick to a healthy eating plan – for weight loss or for good health (or both!).

On this page, you’ll find some basics about healthy shopping, and you can also pick tips from the list on the left to read more hints about how to put it all into practice.

Basics

  • Writing a weekly meal plan can help prevent wasting money on unnecessary items
  • Planning your weekly menu in advance will help avoid having to make decisions about what to eat at the end of the day when you’re more likely to be tired and vulnerable to making poor choices
  • It is better (and less expensive) to buy your fruit and vegetables whole, and prepare them shortly before cooking, rather than using pre-chopped bags.  Fruit and vegetables lose some of their goodness once they have been chopped
  • Don’t just buy fresh fruit and vegetables - frozen and canned vegetables are equally as good for you because they have been frozen, or canned, very soon after harvesting, whereas fresh produce can sometimes be sitting around for days in transit
  • Buy lean cuts of meat and poultry or trim the fat before cooking
  • Always look at the ‘best before’ or ‘use by’ dates on foods, and buy the freshest food available - check that you are going to be able to eat the food before the ‘use by’ date has expired

  • ‘Best before’ dates are concerned with quality rather than safety of the food. The ‘best before’ date is the last day on which the food can be expected to remain at peak quality if properly stored. Food will not be dangerous after this date, but its quality may suffer
  • ‘Use by’ dates are used on foods which are highly perishable. Using food after this date could make you ill. It is against the law to sell any food that has passed its ‘used by’ date
