Healthy Eating Tips for Shopping - Avoiding the 'danger' aisles

Sounds simple. Pinal Patel, nutritionist says, "make an effort to avoid the aisles that you find are ‘danger’ aisles.  For some, it will be the crisp and biscuit aisles, for others it may be the cheese and pie aisles.  Not that you should be denying yourself these things – however, by going down the aisle you may be tempted to ‘stock up’ on more than you need…"avoiding-the-danger-aisle.jpg

"Find lighter alternatives to snacks such as yoghurts, cakes, biscuits".

Only buy snacks in bulk if you know you can spread them out over the week – and not eat them all in a few days!

Basics

  • If you steer clear of the aisles that sell the types of snacks you know will make it difficult for you to keep to your eating plan you are less likely to put them in your basket.
  • Aisles that contain items such as crisps, biscuits, chocolates and sweets are often in close proximity to each other, making it easier to give a wide berth to a whole block of 'dangerous' goods.

A common Myth and Misconception

  • Reduced fat and low fat biscuits are snack foods that are healthy‘Reduced’ fat doesn’t necessarily mean the item in question is low in fat or indeed low in calories. Foods that are labelled as ‘low’ fat might still be high in salt and sugar. Low fat biscuits are better choices than the standard varieties, but should still be used as a treat, because they may still be high in calories.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you need something that is stocked in the same aisle as some of the foods you should avoid, just make a beeline for the item you wish to purchase and head back down the aisle.

  • As long as you are buying a range of healthy foods including lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat and low fat dairy products, there is no reason why you can’t treat yourself occasionally. Just try to keep treats for special occasions.
  • Fill up your trolley with fruits, vegetables, bread, lean meats, fish and low fat dairy products, leaving very little space for anything from the danger aisles!
  • The more you avoid the danger zones, the less you will feel the need to go down these aisles in future shopping trips.
