Reduce dietary sugar – The Basics
“Sugar is not required by your body, but it does add taste and variety to your diet. Because of this, it helps reduce the amount of fat and salt eaten in a diet, as it’s an (often enjoyable) alternative”, nutritionist Todd Donnelly ANutr explains.
“Natural sugars are found in fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. These ‘natural’ sugars come as part of a package of nutrients e.g. vitamin C, beta carotene, and so these sugars are nutrient-rich calories”.
“Any additional sugar used by food manufacturers in producing their products, e.g. fruit pies, cheese cake, sweets is referred to as ‘added sugar’. Added sugar (e.g. sucrose, fructose) does not contribute any nutrients other than calories, which are often referred to as ‘empty calories’”.
“Reducing the levels of these ‘added sugar’ is where you will see greatest gains in weight loss.” Todd adds.
